⚠ The hard truth

The BPT now takes five years: four years of study and a compulsory one-year internship. You may practise only after registration, and registration needs a recognised qualification from a recognised institution, so check the institution before you pay fees. The NEET rule changes in 2027–28: check the admission notice for your year.

Meet the eligibility and get admission 2 steps
  1. Check the rules for your admission year

For 2026–27, NCAHP deferred the NEET requirement: the merit list is based on your Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology. From 2027–28, no candidate will be admitted unless they have appeared in NEET (UG).

Real-world task: Write down your Class 12 PCB percentage, the year you plan to join and the rule that applies to that year.

Why it matters: The rule changed between 2026–27 and 2027–28, so your admission year decides what you need.

    Checklist

    • Check you have at least 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taken together (40% for SC, ST, OBC-NCL and PwBD candidates)
    • Check you pass English and will be 17 by the date of admission
    • If you will join in 2027–28 or later, register for NEET (UG)

  2. Choose a recognised institution and apply

Admission to the BPT is on the basis of eligibility and a merit list. Only a recognised qualification from a recognised institution leads to registration, so check the institution before you pay fees.

Real-world task: Make a shortlist of institutions and note each one’s admission notice and closing date.

Why it matters: A qualification that is not recognised does not lead to registration.

    Checklist

    • Read the admission notice where you want to study, and NCAHP’s public notices for the year’s admission deadline
    • Get a physical fitness certificate from an authorised medical attendant: you submit it with the application
    • Keep your Class 10 and 12 marksheets and any category certificates ready

The four-year BPT course 2 steps
  1. Years 1 and 2: build the foundations

Year 1 includes human anatomy, human physiology, biochemistry, the fundamentals of exercise modalities and of electro-physical agents, psychology and sociology, and India’s healthcare delivery system. Year 2 includes pathology and microbiology, pharmacology, public health, emergency care and life support skills, exercise therapy, electrotherapy and biomechanics (NCAHP curriculum, 2025).

Real-world task: Analyse one everyday movement, such as standing up from a chair, and list the joints and main muscles it uses.

Why it matters: Everything you treat later rests on anatomy, movement and the physical agents you use.

    Checklist

    • Learn human anatomy region by region, with the joints and muscles each movement uses
    • Practise exercise therapy and electrotherapy in the college laboratories
    • Learn biomechanics: how forces act on the body in posture and movement
    Open this step ↑
  2. Years 3 and 4: physiotherapy in clinical conditions

Year 3 includes general medicine and paediatrics, general surgery, orthopaedics, physiotherapy in medical, surgical and orthopaedic conditions, physical and functional diagnosis and prescription, and research methodology and evidence-based practice. Year 4 includes neurology and physiotherapy in neurological conditions, cardiothoracic conditions, sports physiotherapy and exercise prescription, ethics, medico-legal aspects and management, community physiotherapy and rehabilitation, a project and clinical rotation.

Real-world task: Write up one supervised patient case: your assessment, your diagnosis and your treatment plan.

Why it matters: These years turn your knowledge into the assessment and treatment you will give as a physiotherapist.

    Checklist

    • Practise patient assessment: history, examination and functional diagnosis
    • Learn manual therapy techniques such as joint mobilisation under supervision
    • Plan rehabilitation for patients with orthopaedic, neurological and cardiothoracic conditions
    Open this step ↑
The one-year internship 1 steps
  1. Complete the compulsory rotatory internship

After passing all examinations in all subjects, you do a one-year rotatory internship in your institute’s hospital or an affiliated or approved hospital. The institute pays a stipend set by the State Council. Up to 4 months can be an externship at an institute the State Council approves, and 2 months are a rural posting, preferably at a CHC, PHC or rural rehabilitation centre.

Real-world task: Keep a weekly log of the patients you assessed and treated in each posting.

Why it matters: The BPT is a five-year programme including the internship.

    Checklist

    • Complete the Basic Life Support (BLS) programme, which is mandatory during the internship
    • Keep the internship log book the curriculum prescribes and get it signed
    • Plan any externship and your rural posting with your institute

Register and start practising 2 steps
  1. Register with your State Allied and Healthcare Council

Under NCAHP’s Registration of Allied and Healthcare Professionals Regulations, 2026, you may practise only after registration. Apply in Form R-1 to the State Council of the state where you live, with the fee your state sets; you are entered in the State Register and the Central Register and get a UID number. Until NCAHP specifies an exit examination, your institution’s final examination counts as the exit examination. If your state has no State Council, you register with the Central Register.

Real-world task: Find your State Allied and Healthcare Council and list the documents and fee it asks for.

Why it matters: Registration is what entitles you to practise as a physiotherapist.

    Checklist

    • Find your State Allied and Healthcare Council
    • Prepare your degree, internship and identity documents and the fee
    • Note that registration is valid for five years
    Open this step ↑
  2. Keep your registration and choose your path

Registration is renewed every five years if you have done at least 15 hours of continuing professional development a year and 75 hours over the five years, no more than half of it online. Physiotherapists work in hospitals and nursing homes, with sports teams and fitness centres, in community rehabilitation and health promotion, and in independent clinics. The two-year Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) admits BPT graduates through a state or university entrance test.

Real-world task: Talk to one hospital physiotherapist and one in private practice about their daily work.

Why it matters: Knowing the options and the renewal rule helps you plan your first years.

    Checklist

    • Plan at least 15 hours of conferences, workshops or training each year
    • Compare hospital, sports, community and private-clinic work
    • Consider the MPT if you want to specialise

Questions people ask about Physiotherapist in India (BPT & State Registration)

Do I need NEET for BPT?

Is there a licensing exam after the BPT?

NCAHP’s 2026 registration regulations provide for an exit examination that NCAHP will specify. Until it does, your institution’s final examination counts as the exit examination.

Who regulates physiotherapy in India?

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) sets the curriculum and standards under the NCAHP Act, 2021. Your State Allied and Healthcare Council registers you, and you also appear in NCAHP’s Central Register.
