Commercial pilot licence by country

The official rules of 11 aviation regulators side by side: India, the US, the UK, the EU (EASA), Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the UAE, South Africa and Brazil.

From each regulator’s own rules, checked between 8 October 2026 and 28 October 2026. Rules change, so check the regulator before you pay for training.

What is the same, and what is not

  • The airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) needs at least 1,500 hours of flight time in all 11. The US also has a restricted ATP for 750, 1,000 or 1,250 hours (former military pilots and aviation graduates).
  • A commercial pilot licence (CPL) can be issued from age 18 everywhere. The ATPL needs 21, or 23 for a full US ATP.
  • Most places ask for 200 hours for the CPL, or about 150 after an approved full-time course. The US asks for 250. Singapore asks for 155 after an approved course and 700 without one.
  • Every place needs a Class 1 (first-class) medical for the CPL except the US, which asks for second class. Get it before you pay for training.
  • Only India (Class 10+2 with Physics and Mathematics) and Brazil (secondary school) set a school requirement in the licence rules. Elsewhere, airlines and flight schools set their own.
