Questions people ask about US Attorney / Lawyer (JD & Uniform Bar Exam)

Clear answers regarding timelines, prerequisites, salaries, and study strategies.

What is the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) and which states accept it?

The Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), prepared by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), is a two-day exam made up of the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE, 200 multiple-choice questions), the Multistate Essay Examination and the Multistate Performance Test. It is being replaced by the NextGen bar exam: first given in July 2026, with the UBE’s last administration in February 2028. NCBE publishes which jurisdictions use which exam and from when.

How much do first-year lawyers make in the United States?

Starting pay for new lawyers varies very widely: large national firms, government, public-interest organisations, mid-sized firms and small practices pay very differently. The NALP publishes annual starting-salary data, and government legal jobs publish their pay scales.

How long does it take to become a lawyer after finishing college?

It takes exactly 3 academic years (6 semesters) of full-time study at an ABA-accredited law school to earn a Juris Doctor (JD). Following graduation in May, candidates spend 10 weeks studying for the July Bar Examination, with results and formal swearing-in taking place between October and January.

Can foreign-trained lawyers (with an LLB) take the US Bar Exam?

Yes. Several key states—most notably New York, California, and Washington—allow foreign law graduates with a qualifying common law or civil law degree to sit for the bar exam, typically after completing a 1-year Master of Laws (LLM) program at an ABA-approved law school with mandatory credits in American jurisprudence and professional ethics.

What is the passing score for the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE)?

Each jurisdiction sets its own passing score for the bar exam. NCBE publishes a chart of minimum passing scores by jurisdiction: check it, and your state’s bar admission authority, for the exam you will take.
