Questions fréquentes : US Physician Assistant (PA-C & PANCE)
Des réponses claires sur la durée, les prérequis, les salaires et les méthodes d’étude.
What is the difference between a Physician Assistant (PA) and a Nurse Practitioner (NP)?
PAs are educated under the medical model (paralleling medical school curriculum with broad generalist training across all specialties and surgical first-assisting). PAs can shift between medical specialties without recertification. NPs follow a nursing-model curriculum with track-specific focus (e.g., Family NP, Acute Care, Psychiatric NP) and require post-graduate certificate programs to switch specialty populations.
How many patient care experience (PCE) hours are needed for PA school?
Each ARC-PA accredited program sets its own patient care experience requirement, and many expect a substantial number of hours. Check the current requirements of every program you plan to apply to (the PA Education Association’s program directory lists them). Roles that usually count include EMT or paramedic, certified nursing assistant, medical assistant and respiratory therapist.
How much do Physician Assistants make in the United States?
Physician assistants earn a median of $135,880 a year (US Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025), and the BLS projects employment to grow 21% from 2025 to 2035. Pay varies by specialty, setting and state: the BLS publishes wage data by state and metro area.
Can Physician Assistants prescribe medications and perform surgery?
Yes. PAs have prescribing authority in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia, and all US territories, including Schedule II through V controlled substances (when registered with the DEA). In surgical specialties, PAs act as surgical first-assists—opening, retracting, resecting under surgeon direction, and closing incisions—as well as performing in-office minor surgical procedures independently.
What is the PANCE exam format and passing rate?
The PANCE has five blocks of 60 questions (300 in total) and five hours of testing, with extra time for breaks and a tutorial (NCCPA). NCCPA publishes the passing standard and pass rates each year: check its current figures before you sit the exam.
