Questions fréquentes : UK Registered Nurse (NMC Registration & NHS Bands 5–8)
Des réponses claires sur la durée, les prérequis, les salaires et les méthodes d’étude.
How much do nurses earn in the UK under the NHS Agenda for Change pay scale?
NHS nurse pay follows the Agenda for Change pay bands. For 2026/27 (from 1 April 2026), NHS Employers publishes: Band 5 (newly qualified staff nurse) £32,073 to £39,043; Band 6 £39,959 to £48,117; Band 7 £49,387 to £56,515; Band 8a £57,528 to £64,750. Bands 8b to 8c are higher. Extra pay for unsocial hours and High Cost Area Supplements around London is set in the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service handbook. Pay scales change every year: check NHS Employers for the current figures.
What is the NMC Test of Competence (CBT and OSCE) for international nurses?
The NMC Test of Competence (ToC) is the standardized two-part examination required for internationally educated nurses to register in the UK. Part 1 is the Computer-Based Test (CBT), a 115-question multiple-choice exam testing theoretical clinical knowledge and numeracy, taken in the candidate's home country via Pearson VUE. Part 2 is the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), a practical 10-station clinical exam taken at one of the approved UK university test centres (testing Assessment, Planning, Implementation, Evaluation - APIE, and core nursing skills).
What English language test score is required for NMC nursing registration?
The NMC accepts IELTS Academic and OET. It sets no overall score: you need the required score in each skill. IELTS: 7 in reading, listening and speaking and 6.5 in writing. OET: B (350 or above) in reading, listening and speaking and C+ (300 or above) in writing. The NMC also sets how recent your result must be and when two sittings can be combined: check its English language pages before you book.
Can overseas nurses get UK visa sponsorship to work in the NHS?
Yes. Qualified international nurses are in high demand and eligible for the UK Health and Care Worker visa (a sub-category of the Skilled Worker visa). NHS Trusts and certified private healthcare employers sponsor successful applicants with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), paying discounted visa application fees, exemptions from the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), and fast-tracked visa processing. Many NHS Trusts provide relocation packages covering flights, initial accommodation, and OSCE examination fees.
What is NMC Revalidation and how often must UK nurses complete it?
NMC Revalidation is the mandatory process every registered nurse in the UK must complete every 3 years to maintain their registration. Requirements include logging at least 450 practice hours, completing 35 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) with at least 20 hours of participatory learning, collecting 5 pieces of practice-related feedback, writing 5 written reflective accounts, having a professional development discussion with another NMC registrant, and obtaining a formal third-party confirmation.
