Questions fréquentes : UK Doctor (NHS Foundation Programme & GMC Licensure)

Des réponses claires sur la durée, les prérequis, les salaires et les méthodes d’étude.

What is the MLA, and do international doctors still take PLAB?

The Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) is the GMC’s licensing benchmark. UK medical students pass it as part of their degree: the Applied Knowledge Test (AKT), a computer-based exam, and the Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment (CPSA). International doctors who want to join the UK register continue to take PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, which the GMC has made compliant with the MLA requirements, so both groups are assessed on the same content map (GMC, Medical Licensing Assessment).

How much do junior doctors and NHS consultants earn in the United Kingdom?

Basic pay in England from 1 April 2026 (NHS Employers, Pay and Conditions Circular (M&D) 1/2026): Foundation Year 1 £35,309 to £39,301; Foundation Year 2 £42,995 to £48,182; consultants (2003 contract) £113,565 to £150,569. Doctors in training also get extra pay for qualifying out-of-hours work (a 37% enhancement under the 2016 contract), and specialty registrars are paid on higher pay points. Pay changes every year: check the current NHS Employers circular.

How does the UK Foundation Programme (UKFPO) allocation process work?

All graduating UK medical students and eligible international graduates apply to the UK Foundation Programme through the Oriel system. Allocation to foundation schools across the UK uses a Preference Informed Allocation (PIA) system where applicants rank all foundation schools in order of preference and are matched through an automated algorithm without using academic quartiles.

Can international medical graduates (IMGs) work as doctors in the NHS?

Yes. International medical graduates with an acceptable primary medical qualification show their English (IELTS Academic 7.5 overall with at least 7.0 in each area, or OET Medicine grade B in each area), pass PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, gain GMC registration with a licence to practise, and secure an NHS post, often with Health and Care Worker visa sponsorship.

How long does it take to become an NHS consultant or GP in the UK?

Becoming a General Practitioner (GP) takes approximately 10 years total (5 years medical school + 2 years Foundation Programme + 3 years GP Specialty Training). Becoming a hospital Consultant takes 12 to 15 years total (5 years medical school + 2 years Foundation + 2–3 years Core Training + 4–6 years Higher Specialty Training depending on specialty complexity, such as Cardiology, Neurosurgery, or General Surgery).
