⚠ La dure réalité

Only a registered pharmacist may dispense medicines, and only a course from a PCI-approved institution leads to registration: check approval before you pay any fees. A D.Pharm is the quickest route, but since 2022 it also needs the exit examination before registration. Running your own pharmacy also needs a licence for retail sale of drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945.

Choose your route and get admission 2 étapes
  1. Choose D.Pharm or B.Pharm

Both lead to registration as a pharmacist. D.Pharm is two years plus practical training and the exit examination; B.Pharm is four years and opens more industry and further-study options. D.Pharm holders can join B.Pharm in the second year (lateral entry).

Tâche concrète: Write down which route fits your time and budget, and why.

Pourquoi c’est important: The route decides how soon you can register and what you can do afterwards.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Compare the two routes’ length and what each lets you do
    • Check you meet PCI’s Class 12 subjects for the route you want
    • Plan whether you will start with D.Pharm and move into B.Pharm later
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
  2. Get admission to a PCI-approved institution

PCI does not set an entrance exam: admission is through your state’s or university’s own process. Only an institution approved by PCI under section 12 of the Pharmacy Act leads to registration.

Tâche concrète: Make a shortlist of PCI-approved institutions near you and compare government and private seats.

Pourquoi c’est important: A course from an unapproved institution does not lead to registration.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Read the admission notice of your state or university for the year
    • Check on pci.nic.in that the institution is approved by PCI
    • Keep your Class 10 and 12 marksheets and any category certificates ready
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
D.Pharm route 3 étapes
  1. Complete the 2-year D.Pharm

The course covers pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, human anatomy and physiology, social pharmacy, pharmacology, community pharmacy and management, biochemistry and clinical pathology, pharmacotherapeutics, hospital and clinical pharmacy, and pharmacy law and ethics (PCI Education Regulations 2020).

Tâche concrète: Keep a notebook of common medicines with their dose, storage and main precautions.

Pourquoi c’est important: These subjects are exactly what the exit examination tests.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Attend at least the working days PCI requires each year
    • Practise dispensing, labelling and record keeping in the college laboratories
    • Learn the main laws on medicines and pharmacy practice
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
  2. Do the 500-hour practical training

After you appear in the Part II examination you train for at least 500 hours, over at least three months, in a government hospital or dispensary, a pharmacy licensed for retail sale of drugs with registered pharmacists, or another hospital recognised by PCI.

Tâche concrète: Log what you did each week of training: dispensing, records, stock and patient advice.

Pourquoi c’est important: The diploma needs both the course and the training.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Get the practical training contract form from your institution
    • Learn the records that pharmacy laws require
    • Get your training certificate signed at the end
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
  3. Pass the Diploma in Pharmacy Exit Examination

Under PCI’s 2022 regulations: three multiple-choice papers in English (pharmaceutics, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry, hospital and clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical jurisprudence and drug store management), at least 50% in each paper, all three passed in the same attempt, with no limit on attempts. Passing gives you a certificate of eligibility to register.

Tâche concrète: Make a revision plan that covers each exam subject at least twice.

Pourquoi c’est important: From 2022, a D.Pharm alone is not enough to register as a pharmacist.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Check the current examination schedule announced by PCI
    • Revise every subject in the three papers
    • Keep your certificate of eligibility for the State Pharmacy Council
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
B.Pharm route 2 étapes
  1. Complete the 4-year B.Pharm

Four academic years of pharmaceutical sciences as PCI prescribes, including pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and pharmacognosy. D.Pharm holders join in the second year.

Tâche concrète: Keep a laboratory record of every formulation you prepare, with its purpose and checks.

Pourquoi c’est important: B.Pharm opens hospital, community and industry roles and further study.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Attend at least 100 working days each semester
    • Build strong laboratory skills in formulation and analysis
    • Learn pharmacology well enough to explain how common medicines act
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
  2. Do the 150-hour practical training

After the second year you train for 150 hours, over at least one month, in a hospital or community pharmacy or in the pharmaceutical industry.

Tâche concrète: After your training, write one page on what a pharmacist does there each day.

Pourquoi c’est important: The training shows you where you might like to work after graduating.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Choose pharmacy practice or industry for your training
    • Ask your institution for an approved training place
    • Keep your training certificate
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
Register and start work 2 étapes
  1. Register with your State Pharmacy Council

Registration is under the Pharmacy Act, 1948: apply to the Registrar of your State Pharmacy Council with the fee and documents. D.Pharm holders also present their exit examination certificate of eligibility.

Tâche concrète: Find your State Pharmacy Council and list the documents it asks for.

Pourquoi c’est important: Only a registered pharmacist may dispense medicines.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Find your State Pharmacy Council and its registration requirements
    • Prepare your certificates, training certificate and identity documents
    • Keep your registration renewed as your council requires
    Ouvrir cette étape ↑
  2. Choose your path

Registered pharmacists work in community pharmacies, hospitals and the pharmaceutical industry; running your own pharmacy also needs a licence for retail sale of drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945.

Tâche concrète: Talk to one community pharmacist and one hospital pharmacist about their daily work.

Pourquoi c’est important: Knowing the options helps you plan your first job.

    Liste de contrôle

    • Compare community, hospital and industry roles
    • If you plan your own pharmacy, read the licence requirements for retail sale of drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945
    • Consider further study (B.Pharm after D.Pharm, or M.Pharm after B.Pharm)
