Questions fréquentes : Canadian Lawyer (JD / NCA & Provincial Bar Admission)
Des réponses claires sur la durée, les prérequis, les salaires et les méthodes d’étude.
What is the NCA process and how long does it take for foreign-trained lawyers to qualify in Canada?
The National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), run by the Federation of Law Societies of Canada (FLSC), assesses the legal credentials of foreign lawyers and law graduates. Once you submit your academic transcripts and certificates of good standing, the NCA issues an Assessment Report assigning specific subjects you must clear. Most foreign graduates are assigned 5 mandatory core subjects (Canadian Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Foundations of Canadian Law, and Professional Responsibility) plus up to 3–6 electives depending on their degree background. Candidates can complete these through self-study challenge exams (held 4 times a year online) or by enrolling in a Canadian LL.M. / course-based program. The self-study pathway typically takes 12 to 18 months, concluding with the award of the NCA Certificate of Qualification, which grants the same licensing eligibility as a Canadian JD.
What is the difference between Articling and the Law Practice Program (LPP) in Ontario?
In Canada, before being called to the bar, law graduates must complete experiential training. The traditional route is 'Articling'—a paid 10-month apprenticeship at a law firm, corporate legal department, or government office where you work under a supervising principal lawyer. Because articling spots are highly competitive, Ontario introduced the Law Practice Program (LPP) offered by Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU / Ryerson) in English and the University of Ottawa in French. The LPP consists of a 4-month intensive simulated law firm training module followed by a 4-month approved work placement. Both pathways are fully accredited by the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) and carry identical standing for Call to the Bar.
How much do corporate and associate lawyers earn in Canada (Bay Street vs Regional)?
Lawyer pay in Canada varies widely with the employer, practice area and city: large national firms, government, in-house legal departments and small practices pay very differently. There is no national pay scale; for salaried roles in government, check the published pay scales of the employer.
What are the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) Barrister and Solicitor licensing exams like?
In Ontario, the Law Society of Ontario’s licensing process includes two self-study, open-book, multiple-choice exams: the Barrister exam and the Solicitor exam. Each lasts 4 hours 30 minutes and has 160 items, and you have three attempts at each within your licensing term (Law Society of Ontario). You also complete articling or the Law Practice Program. Other provinces’ law societies run their own bar admission programs.
Can foreign lawyers practice law in Canada without writing the full Canadian JD?
Yes. Foreign-trained lawyers do not need to attend a 3-year Canadian JD program. By completing the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) equivalency exams, foreign lawyers earn an NCA Certificate of Qualification, which satisfies the academic requirement for all provincial Canadian law societies (outside Quebec, which operates under a civil law system). From there, foreign lawyers simply complete the standard provincial bar exams and experiential training (articling or LPP) to become fully licensed Canadian Barristers and Solicitors with unlimited practice rights.
